With over 60 percent of the total voter turnout, opposition Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM)’s candidate for Malé City mayorship, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has won the race.
Preliminary results publicized by the Elections Commission of Maldives following Saturday’s Local Council and Women’s Development Committee elections show that the former housing minister leads the race with over 9,000 votes in his favor.
Anas Abdul Sattar, who represents the main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), fell short with a little over 5,000 votes in his favor.
Shortly after the publication of results, the MDP candidate posted a Tweet congratulating Dr. Muizzu on his electoral win. As such, he noted that the people of Malé City have spoken and that he has accepted the outcome of the elections.
Anas went on to urge MDP to re-strategize its approach to win over the people of Malé City, after Saturday’s poll results.
During Saturday’s polls, 371 ballot boxes were stationed across the capital region, for which over 48,000 Malé City residents were eligible to cast their votes.
