Two individuals have been arrested in connection to a drug bust in Ukulhas island of Alif Alif atoll.
Maldives Police Service (MPS) launched an operation following a tip-off concerning drug trafficking on the island, during which they arrested a 22-year-old and a 24-year-old on Tuesday.
The operation was carried out by officers stationed in Ukulhas island as well as the Alif Alif Atoll Police who jointly confiscated 31 rubber packets stuffed with suspected narcotics, from the two suspects.
In a separate drug operation conducted in Komandoo island of Shaviyani atoll, officers stationed in the island and the police intelligence unit confiscated a package onboard a boat that arrived in the island from capital Malé City, after receiving an intel report that drugs were being smuggled into the island via sea route.
Although officers are yet to make any arrests in connection to the case, a film cannister filled with suspected narcotics was confiscated from the package.
Both cases are currently under further investigation.
These drug operations are part of larger efforts by the police institution to curb drug trafficking and smuggling in the Maldives, while cracking down on major drug smuggling networks across the nation.
