Maldives Police Service (MPS) have confirmed that 23 out of 25 protestors arrested from Friday's opposition protests have been fined and released, with the two remaining in custody having attempted to assault Police officers at the heated confrontation over the weekend.

Speaking to Raajje MV, a Police Media Official confirmed that 23 out of the 25 opposition supporters arrested from Friday's protests had been fined and released, and that the two people who remain in Police custody at this time had attempted to assault Police officers during the weekend's heated confrontation. Police provided no other details in relation to the case.

Opposition supporters had thrown heavy criticism at the incumbent administration during Friday's protests, alleging that the government had sold Maldivian land to India, and that India had been allowed to undermine the sovereignty of Maldives as a nation.

Opposition supporters had staged the most recent edition of their recurring protests in front of the PPM Head Office in Male' City, with MPS having barricaded the area to prevent civilians from gathering as the protests do not seem to progress in a peaceful manner.

The opposition PPM-PNC coalition have been conducting a series of protests across the nation's capital over various demands. Police have been obstructing the protests, as they go against health and safety guidelines issued by Health Protection Agency in light of the Covid-19 pandemic, at a time gatherings of more than five people are presently banned across the Male' area. Opposition supporters arrested from protests are fined with MVR 1,000 for violating HPA guidelines prior to being released.
