The Elections Commission (EC) has announced that they will be extending the re-registration period once more this week for parties registered to vote in a way that compromises the secrecy of their vote, and that ballot boxes will not be placed in five resorts as not enough persons were registered to vote from those islands.

EC President Ahmed Shareef announced that re-registration will be open for 8,000 parties who were previously registered to vote in a way that compromised the secrecy of the vote. EC President Shareef confirmed that re-registration for these voters would commence within the week.

The President of the Elections Commission has previously confirmed that 26,750 forms had been submitted for re-registration to the Ccmmission between 2 and 11 March.

The Elections Commission has also confirmed that ballot boxes will not be stationed at five resorts, at B. Kihaadhuffaru, Lh. Madhiriguraidhoo, R. Kottefaru, ADh. Thelu Veliga and Dh. Dhoores. The commission revealed that ballot boxes would not be placed in these resorts as not enough persons had registered to vote from the islands at the close of the deadline.

The upcoming Local Council and Women's Development Committee Elections are slated to be held on 10 April 2021. The Elections Commission had been issued an initial budget of MVR 51 million to conduct the elections, and has since secured an additional MVR 29.8 million for other expenses projected to be incurred.
