118 new cases of Covid-19 were reported across the Maldives on Friday, with 124 additional recoveries confirmed from the infection nationwide.
95 of Friday's 118 new cases were from the Male' area, with 4 more cases reported from inhabited islands and 19 new cases detected from operational resorts. Health authorities tested a total of 2,964 samples for the infection between Thursday and Friday.
With this, the Maldives total Covid-19 case tally is now 20,565, of which 2,658 are active cases. By sundown on Friday, 167 people remain admitted in hospitals for Covid-19 treatment across the country.
A further 124 recoveries from the infection were reported on Wednesday. bringing the total number of recoveries observed for the infection in Maldives up to 17,836.
On Thursday, health authorities reported the 64th death from Covid-19 in the Maldives, confirming the passing of a 78-year-old local man, who had been receiving treatment for Covid-19 while admitted in DH11. The Maldives' Covid-19 death toll is now 64, with the three most recent deaths reported over the last week.
HPA continues to advise vaccinating against the infection, in addition to highlighting the importance of following health and safety restrictions being implemented across the country. Health authorities have also noted that some are disregarding quarantine and isolation to go mingle with others, resulting in many persons being identified as direct contacts of positive cases.
The curfew imposed in Fuvahmulah City was revoked on Friday, with the island to remain under monitoring until 15 March. Restrictions for schools, mosques and businesses have been strengthened in the Greater Male' area, from where a majority of daily new cases are confirmed. The Health Minister Ahmed Naseem has previously described the Covid-19 situation in Male' City as "out of control" and "dangerous". However, he assured that authorities are working towards reducing the capital's caseload without initiating an economically restrictive full-lockdown in the city.
