Another Maldivian has died from complications of the ongoing global Covid-19 pandemic.

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) revealed that deceased is a 78-year-old Maldivian man who are admitted at the 11th floor of Dharumavantha Hospital for treatment.

The man passed away at around 6:09pm on Thursday.

The public health authority has declared this the 64th Covid-19 fatality in the Maldives.

This comes less than 24 hours after the coronavirus pandemic claimed a 63rd victim in the Maldives; a 67-year-old man.

The man succumbed to complications of the virus after having been rushed to the emergency room of Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) in an unresponsive state at around 5:30am on Wednesday.

He was declared dead by doctors half an hour later.

Thus far, three deaths have been reported this week, a 62-year-old man also died from Covid-19 complications on February 28, while receiving treatment on the 11th floor of Dharumavantha Hospital.

A day earlier, an 80-year-old Maldivian woman being treated at Hulhumalé Medical Facility succumbed to the virus as well.

This comes at a time Covid-19 fatalities have doubled in count since January 2021. As such, while four deaths were observed in January, the number increased to 10 during February.

With a spike in case count, hospitalizations have also increased in comparison to what was observed during the second Covid-19 wave in 2020.

HPA stressed that fewer people visit the flu clinic now despite having Covid-19 symptoms, which in turns show a lesser flu positivity rate despite daily infections spiking. The Health Emergency Operations Center (HEOC) has since revealed that stricter measures will be enforced to subdue the ongoing third Covid-19 peak and curb virus transmission across the epicenter, Malé City.
