The island council is receiving support for their efforts in curbing the spread of the virus

The island council of Gaaf Alif Dhevvadhoo has revealed that most of the positive cases confirmed in the island are elderly patients.

President of the Dhevvadhoo council, Ibrahim Thaufeeq highlighted that the island community has been cooperating with the council in adhering to the health and safety measures in place against the spread of the Covid-19 outbreak in the island, and that they have been receiving support from the island community in their efforts to curb the outbreak.

Thaufeeq added that a total of 55 Covid-19 cases have been confirmed on the island thus far and that authorities had collected almost 400 samples for Covid-19 testing some of which returned negative to the infection on Saturday.

He noted that there are a number of samples with pending results and that healthcare officials are currently working to collect more samples from the island community.

While youth, children and elderly are among those infected with the pandemic in the island, most of them are elderly patients.

Highlighting that the overall situation of the island is good, Thaufeeq added that there are some families in need of food, essential medications and water supply among other needs. In light of this, the council president also noted that the communities from other islands in the atoll have been of much assistance during these challenging times, in providing support, assistance and essentials.

Dhevvadhoo island council has been conducting Covid-19 awareness sessions for the community as well.

With a population of 1,380 Dhevvadhoo island saw the first case of Covid-19 on December 24, last year.
