The Prosecutor General’s (PG) Office has announced that the case linked to the 149kg of drugs seized from Hulhuvaarulu island in Gaaf Dhaal atoll will not be appealed.

PG Office revealed that they are currently working to implement additional actions in connection to the case, following the decision to uphold the Criminal Court’s conviction.

The Criminal Court annulled the case due to a number of issues including those linked to prosecution. Despite the case falling under the jurisdiction of the magistrate court, the case was first lodged at the Criminal Court. Further, the PG Office had submitted the case to the magistrate court after the prosecution period had ended.

The magistrate court threw out of the case against the five suspects arrested in connection to the case earlier this week on January 10.

The 149kg drugs were found buried in the uninhabited island of Gaafu Dhaal atoll, on 29th April 2019.

The confiscated drugs carry a street value of MVR 260 million and initial reports of the drug bust were revealed during a dinner night to commemorate the 86th anniversary of Maldives Police Service, by Commissioner of Police, Mohamed Hameed.
