Former Supreme Court Justice, Mujthaz Fahmy, 61, passed away early Thursday morning while receiving treatment for Covid-19 at Dharumavantha Hospital.

Mujthaz's passing was confirmed by his younger brother and MP for North-Maafannu constituency, Imthiyaz Fahmy.

Imthiyaz posted a tweet saying his oldest brother, who had been "like a father" to him, had passed away around 2am early Thursday morning.

Mujthaz was admitted at L. Gan Hospital earlier on January 3 for treatment after testing positive for Covid-19. He was transferred to the specialty care at the Covid-19 center in Dharumavantha Hospital on Wednesday, following complications.

It is unknown why Mujthaz had travelled to Gan before his passing; he had observed home-quarantine at an island leased for agricultural purposes, L. Kudafushi.

Mujthaz served on the Supreme Court from September 2008 to August 2010, before retirement. His time at the Supreme Court was marred with volatility that was linked to major judicial failings, which eventually led to the alleged coup d'état of 7 February 2012 that toppled Former President Mohamed Nasheed's government.
