Managing Director for Waste Management Corporation Ltd. (WAMCO), Adam Mohamed has said that the company aims to to start producing compost on five agricultural islands this year.

Adam made the remarks at an appearance on RaajjeTV's "Fala Surukhee" programme on Monday, explaining that the project was initially due to be launched in 2020 but had to be delayed following the Covid-19 pandemic.

He said that the goal now was to complete the project by the end of the year with compost-production having been started on five islands dedicated to agricultural activities, and that they had already begun talks with the councils of two of the five islands.

Indicating that their goal would be achieved by the end of the year, WAMCO's Managing Director said they were preparing a model for sustainable and cyclic waste management that help citizens properly dispose of and recycle their own waste on islands. He said the objective of the programme is to solve problems related to waste management on populous islands as well as islands dedicated to agricultural activities.

Adam also highlighted that they had many such beneficial projects waiting in the pipeline, but faced difficulties in implementing them. He revealed that WAMCO had planned to dispose of the mountains of improperly managed waste gathering on different islands of the Maldives in 2020, but travel restrictions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic had prevented them from executing the projects.

He further detailed that WAMCO had arranged for waste that had been gathered on islands across five regions for years to be disposed of over the course of five years. He went on to confirm that WAMCO was ready to start work on this project even now, and that they would do so as soon as they received the green-light from the Ministry of Environment and other relevant authorities.

Adam admitted that the past year had been a difficult one for WAMCO operations, with some services being discontinued, but reaffirmed that WAMCO was fully committed to providing citizens essential services despite the obstacles they face.
