Maldives reported highest daily increase in Covid-19 cases, in weeks.
Mostly foreigners were among the 110 new cases announced on Monday; 79. This is from the 1,828 samples tested within 24 hours.
The Health Emergency Operations Centre (HEOC) said that 21 of the cases were detected from an island under resort development, 10 cases from Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) Cargo Department as well as some staff from two companies involved in the airport expansion project; 22 cases from China Harbour Engineering Company an 16 cases from China Communications Construction Company.
86 of the cases are from the greater Male’ region while the remaining are from other islands or resorts; there are active cases 10 residential islands and 26 resorts.
While Monday’s number brings the country’s Covid-19 case count to 12,314, it pushes the active cases to 947.
According to the Health Protection Agency, 27 additional recoveries were recorded on Monday; 11,316 patients have now recovered from the virus.
Further, an additional coronavirus-related death was reported on Monday, bringing the death toll to 45; HPA said that “a 72-year-old local man taken to Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) in an unresponsive state was declared dead. As per protocol Covid-19 test was done and came as positive”.
This is the seventh death reported this month.
59 patients are receiving treatment at hospitals, 11 more than the previous day.
