Maldives sees drop in communicable diseases compared to last year

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has revealed that Maldives has seen a significant drop in the number of reported cases of communicable diseases in October, in comparison to previous years.

The agency released its ‘Monthly Communicable Disease Report’ on Sunday.

As per the report, only eight cases of dengue were reported in October 2020. This is four lower than the previous month.

While 5,782 common cold cases were reported in October, this is the highest monthly increase this year. There were 16,994 common cold cases confirmed in March. The lowest number was recorded in June, 2269 cases. A total of 84,371 common cold cases were recorded by the end of October.

2,251 viral fever cases were reported in October, an increase from the previous month’s 1,557 cases. Most of the cases were recorded in January this year, 7,263 cases. A total of 27,712 viral fever cases were confirmed from January to October.

October saw a total of 1,003 diarrhea cases, also the highest recorded since March. A total of 13,388 diarrhea cases have been recorded this year.

While all communicable diseases recorded between April to June is lower compared to other months, health officials had previously noted that this is due to the Covid-19 safety measures.
