Small states are part of the solution to address the threats facing the globe, says Minister of Foreign Affairs, Abdulla Shahid.

In a message to extend felicitations of the 75th Anniversary of the United Nations, the minister noted that this year, the United Nations Day falls at a time the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic has reminded the globe of the importance of the UN, in the face of an unprecedented global health crisis.

FM Shahid noted that Maldives has been calling for global peace, economic prosperity and sustainable development for all, as a resilience member committed to the principles enshrined in the UN Charter.

UN has remained a “true and reliable partner” for the Maldives for 55 years since the island nation became a Member State of the UN on September 21, 1965, not long after gaining independence.

Highlighting that the island nation’s journey in the international organization established to maintain global peace and security has shown that small states are not only valuable partners but also part of the solution to address global threats.

Maldives’ track record in the UN mirrors the fact that small states are an important part of addressing new and emergency threats of the 21st century, said Shahid.

While size may constitute a perennial consideration for small states, small states have “an equal voice to contribute” to the international community, added the minister.

In his message FM Shahid also stated that the international organization has remained the universal body for globalization and multilateralism and a major pillar for inspiration and solidarity and in the true spirit of the UN, as the globe navigates the challenges of the current situation, there is unwavering faith in the UN in the search for a better future.

The minister highlighted that UN ensures that “we are connected” despite the evolving global challenges, and that with mutual respect and understanding, the future the globe wishes to build, may be achieved.

An international organization founded by 51 countries, UN was established on October 24, 1945 with an aim to maintain international peace and security after World War II as well as to build friendly relations among states.
