A 67-year-old man has succumbed to Covid-19 in the Maldives.

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) said that the local man passed away on Saturday morning, while being treated at the Hulhumale’ Medical Facility.

This is the 36th death reported since the pandemic reached the island nation, and the second death reported this week.

A 56-year-old Maldivian woman passed away on Sunday.

Maldives has confirmed 11,154 Covid-19 cases thus far. While the capital region was placed on full lockdown following the detection of a community transmission on April 15, the entire country was on a partial lockdown with travel between islands restricted.

While the latter still requires approval, those that travel from the capital region to outlying islands are required to quarantine for a 14-day period.

Lockdown easing began towards the end of May, and there was a significant increase in cases following this and additional safety measures were imposed in the capital region including a curfew.

While there has been a gradual decrease in cases since September, authorities on Friday announced that curfew hours have been reduced to five-hours from 11pm to 4am.
