Hulhumalé Prison has returned to normalcy after coronavirus-stricken patients at the facility, recovered.

Commissioner of Prisons Ahmed Mohamed Fulhu took to Twitter on Saturday, revealing that convicts and those remanded at the facility in the capital city’s suburbs have recovered from the virus.

The quarantine period at the facility expired on Saturday, following which the state of normalcy was returned.

The commissioner expressed gratitude to the prison officers and others who played a role in overcoming the situation of the Covid-19 outbreak.

In a statement regarding the positive cases from the prison facility, the Maldives Correctional Service revealed that five of the six detainees were being held at the facility temporarily, for deportation for violating the immigration laws of the Maldives. The remaining detainee was a prisoner at the Hulhumalé Prison.

Five new cases reported days later pushed the total number of Covid-19 cases in the facility to 11.

Following this, samples for Covid-19 testing were collected from a number of officers, nurses and convicts at the facility.

The correctional authority assured that it will continue to enforce measures and uninterruptedly provide services at prison and detention facilities under the guidelines set by HPA in light of the Covid-19 outbreak.
