Maldives introduces Covid-19 Insurance Plan

One of the biggest obstacles tourists visiting Maldives face is having to arrange medical procedures themselves once they test positive

One of the biggest challenges facing the country has been the absence of such a travel insurance package for tourists

The package comes with "Allied Inbound" and "Allied Inbound Plus" plans

Allied Insurance has launched the Maldives Covid-19 Insurance Plan.

The company introduced the special travel insurance package in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism through a virtual ceremony held on Thursday.

This is the first time a Covid-19 insurance package has been introduced in the island nation.

The package includes two plans, “Allied Inbound” and “Allied Inbound Plus” for durations lasting from less than a week, to more than a week.

The prices for isolation facilities range from USD 75 – 150 and between USD 2,000 – 3,000 for emergency medical transportation by sea from place of illness to the nearest medical facility in Maldives.

Under the plans, prices for emergency medical expenses for treating illness range from USD 75,000 to USD 100,000 with an interment worth USD 20,000.

Speaking during the ceremony, Minister of Tourism Dr. Abdulla Mausoom noted that today marks a happy occasion as one of the biggest challenges facing the country has been the absence of such a travel insurance package for tourists, when the country reopened borders for international travel on July 15.

Dr. Mausoom praised the initiative by the insurance company.

Highlighting that the decision to reopen borders was a courageous one reached by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, the minister added that travelers see Maldives as a “safe destination”.

The minister noted that the current procedure mandates tourist establishments to be responsible for anything that happens to their guests and that the introduction of this insurance plan will provide progress for tourist establishments nationwide.

Speaking during the inauguration ceremony, Allied Insurance company’s Managing Director Mohamed Shafaz revealed that introducing an insurance plan that covers the pandemic is a major progress observed in the tourism industry.

One of the biggest obstacles tourists visiting Maldives face is having to arrange medical procedures themselves once they test positive for the virus. In light of this, Shafaz noted that the new plans cover emergency medical transportation by sea from place of illness to the nearest medical facility as well.

Tourists may have access to the plans through the company’s website, and must purchase the package prior to their visit.
