Three lawmakers are in isolation as the People’s Majlis resumed work for its third session of the year, on Monday.
This includes Speaker and former President, Mohamed Nasheed.
While Deputy Speaker Eva Abdulla presided over Monday’s sitting because of this, she announced that two other MPs are currently in isolation as well.
She did not reveal any further details.
The speaker went into self-quarantine on September 22, after returning from a nearly month-long personal trip to the United Kingdom.
Those returning from abroad are required to undergo a 14-day home quarantine period, as part of the measures to contain the spread of Covid-19 in the island nation. They are only released after testing negative for the virus.
His quarantine period will end on October 6.
In addition, Hulhu-Henveiru constituency MP Hassan Latheef last Monday announced that he had entered quarantine after his mother tested positive for the infection. Latheef is a direct contact, who are also released only after testing negative to Covid-19 after quarantine.
The sittings of the People’s Majlis are divided into three sessions a year, and the speaker has the authority to assign the dates for the commencing and closing of the sessions.
Regulations state that the first term is held from February through April, with the second term commencing after a month-long recess. Majlis goes into recess after the second term in September.
