The Elections Commission of Maldives (EC) has stated that the usual activities to commemorate the International Day of Democracy cannot be held this year as the ambiance is not adequate due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.
In a statement released in commemoration of the International Day of Democracy, EC revealed that this year, the day falls at a time the most deadly and dangerous pandemic is facing the country, for the first time in its history.
Highlighting that the entire globe is affected by the pandemic, EC noted that the pandemic does not give way to hold the usual activities to commemorate the day.
Further noting that modern democracy is the people’s strength, EC stated that the country’s new constitution has secured the basic rights of the people and guaranteed the citizens power. The island nation is experiencing important knowledge in its democratic journey as well.
Highlighting that those in power of establishing laws and leading the country were elected by the people, the commission revealed that they have the responsibility of ensuring a just and independent election, whether it be the presidential, parliamentary or local council elections.
EC plays an important role to ensure that all of the elections held in the Maldives are free of influence and thus, ensuring eligible voters take part in each election for an enhanced democracy and future.
Each citizen has the right to vote willingly and independently and it is of utmost importance to formulate a community that respects the principles of a democratic system and looks forward to maintain a steady democratic system, reads the statement.
The commission further noted that there is a lot of work to be done in order to instill the proper and relevant knowledge as well as skills and characteristics that make up a good democracy, in the people. This needs to be further strengthened in order to maintain democracy for the upcoming generations to observe.
EC urged the citizens to uphold their responsibilities, respect one another and grow as one.
