A local woman passed away from Covid-19 early Sunday morning.

Health Protection Agency (HPA) said that the 58-year-old passed away at 3:55am. She was admitted at the intensive care unit at the Hulhumale’ Medical Facility (HMU).

This is the 32nd death from Covid-19 in the Maldives.

Two were reported last week; a 60-year-old Maldivian man passed away on Wednesday while a 58-year-old local man succumbed to the virus on Tuesday.

While health officials have been expressing concern over the possibility of the country’s health care system being overburdened following a huge surge in cases, the percentage of occupied hospital beds reserved for coronavirus patients had increased alarmingly following the start of the third phase of lockdown easing in July. There has been a gradual decrease in cases for about a week now, with daily new cases remaining below 100.

There are 116 patients admitted at hospitals currently.

Maldives has confirmed 9,052 Covid-19 cases since March 7, and there are currently 1,960 active cases. 7,055 patients have recovered from the infection.
