The People’s Majlis is scheduled to hold the final sitting of the second session of the year on Sunday.

The sitting will commence at 9am on Sunday and was scheduled to deliberate on a number of important bills. The session was set to end on Monday, however, it was extended in light of the pending bills.

The parliamentarians will be voting on approving the new tourism minister’s appointment to the post.

The parliament’s government oversight committee approved Dr. Abdulla Mausoom’s appointment to the post on Monday.

Mausoom was reappointed to the post on Sunday, after he resigned earlier following questions raised over the validity of his appointment to the post of new Tourism Minister after the committee approved his appointment to the post the first time round. As such, members questioned how he was appointed to the post as he was still serving as the Managing Director of a private business, when he took oath of office.

Further placed on Sunday’s agenda are polls on deliberating on the report by the judiciary committee on the appointment of Criminal Court Judge Ali Rasheed Hussain and Dr. Mohamed Ibrahim to the Supreme Court bench.

Majlis will also take a poll on the appointment of new members to the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM), alongside deliberations on passing amendments to the Public Health Protection bill and the Employment Act of the Maldives.
