A 35-year-old man has been arrested for violating Covid-19 travel restrictions.

While travel between the capital and residential islands have been banned following a second surge in Covid-19 cases, police said that the man is to have travelled from Malé City to Vilufushi island of Thaa atoll.

The case is under investigation.

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has issued guidelines on traveling within the country, this include obtaining approval from island council and agreeing to a 14-day quarantine period.

While Maldives has confirmed 6,370 Covid-19 cases since March 7, cases were recently detected from at least 12 residential islands.

Ministry of Health recently revealed that it has received over 9,000 requests to travel from the capital.
