The Presidential Inquiry Commission on Corruption and State Asset Recovery has criticized the Civil Service Commission for negligence in managing documents related to transactions in the cases being investigated by the commission.

The commission held a press conference on Thursday, where the commission’s president, Ahmed Assad revealed that their findings into the embezzlement through the lease of uninhabited islands and lagoons for development through the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC), have revealed attempts to cover up documents related to transactions

As such, Assad noted that employees at the Ministry of Tourism are accused of playing a part in destroying documents.

Highlighting that it is not the responsibility of the Tourism Ministry alone to manage the documents within the ministry, Assad noted that the Civil Services needs to be operated as Civil Service and that civil servants must ensure this under the set procedures and process.

He added that this was noticed in the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC)’s investigations as well. As such, many government institutions could not find some of the documents.

Civil Service Commission has previously come under fire as well for failing to carry out responsibilities.

Members of Parliaments have even called for the dismissal of commission members.

The commission’s former President Shameem is also accused of having been involved in the incarcerated former president, Abdulla Yameen’s campaign during the past presidential elections.
