Electricity costs increased for the month of June

A motion seeking to hold State Electric Company (STELCO) accountable for the spiraling electricity costs is to be submitted to the People’s Majlis.

The motion is to be submitted to the parliament by MP for South-Galolhu constituency, Meekail Ahmed Naseem.

In a letter addressed to Speaker and Former President Mohamed Nasheed, MP Meekail noted that a number of South-Galolhu constituents as well as the general public have been outraged due to the increased costs in electricity for the month of June.

Although STELCO has noted that the increase could be because the government subsidy was slashed due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, the parliamentarian noted that electricity bills were priced over threefold higher than previous months, when the pandemic had not surfaced in the Maldives.

In the letter, Meekail sought from the parliament to hold the company accountable and summon officials for questioning through the relevant committee.

This comes at a time the public has been raising concern over the rising cost of electricity bills for the previous month, at a time the people have been severely impacts financially due to the pandemic.

Since then, STELCO has addressed the issue and assured that they are looking into the matter “as a matter of urgency”.
