Maldives has congratulated India, Mexico, Norway and Ireland, on their election to the UN Security Council.

The four states were elected as non-permanent members of the UNSC for 2021-2022, on Thursday.

Congratulating the states, Maldives’ Ministry of Foreign Affairs tweeted that the country “looks forward to working closely with the new members in addressing today’s global challenges in maintaining peace and security”.

The 15-member Security Council has five permanent members; the US, the UK, France, Russia and China. The 10 non-permanent seats are distributed on a regional basis.

India, Kenya and Djibouti were the candidates from the Africa and Asia-Pacific region while Canada and Ireland competed for the seats among the Western European and other States. Mexico was the only endorsed candidate for the seat among Latin America and Caribbean States. The winner from Africa will be determined in the second round on June 18, as neither Kenya nor Djibouti received the necessary support.

In a separate tweet, the foreign ministry congratulated Turkey’s Volkan Bozkir for his appointment as the UN General Assembly president.

In a secret ballot vote, Bozkir, who was unopposed for the post, received 178 ballots in support as 11 nations abstained. He is currently a Justice and Development (AK) Party lawmaker from Istanbul and head of the Turkish Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee.
