Maldives capital’s lockdown has been extended by another three days, with additional easing measures to be introduced on June 15.
In an announcement made on Thursday, the Director General of Public Health noted that additional lockdown easing measures are to be introduced on June 15 given the changes to the country’s Covid-19 situation, but that measures will remain in place until 14th June.
As such, vehicles and public gatherings are prohibited in all islands in the greater Malé region from 12-14 June, as well public transport and travel between the islands in the region.
Eases from 12-14 June:
- Increase in permits to go out for essentials
- Police permit to be issued to elderly persons above 60 years of age to go out for strolls between 5am and 8am
- Increase in taxi permits
- Increase in permits for cargo transport between Thilafushi and Malé
- Employees at commercial establishments to be allowed to travel for work
- Shops and offices allowed to open, under regulation established by the Ministry of Economic Development
- Construction work to continue with the required permits from the Malé City Council and the housing Development Corporation (HDC)
- Increase in services at banks
- Increase in health and other services
Those that are exempt from these are police and military officers, health officials and those with the National Emergency Operations Center (NEOC) passes.
While the capital was placed under lockdown on April 15, phase of lockdown easing began on May 29. The decision to initiate lockdown easing was announced on May 28, the same day authorities extended the public health emergency declared across the country.
