Police seeks charges against some lockdown violators

A person found to have breached the lockdown will face a MVR 1,000 fine the first time, while repeat offenders will be arrested

Cases against some of the Covid-19 lockdown violators have been forwarded for prosecution.

Assistant Commissioner of Police, Abdulla Fairoosh, revealed this at a press conference held at the National Emergency Operations Center (NEOC) on Thursday night.

328 people have been taken into custody for lockdown breaches. While some of them have been released, Fairoosh said that most cases were sent for prosecution.

However, he did not disclose an exact number.

An official at the Prosecutor General’s Office confirmed this to RaajjeMV, adding that these details will be shared “later”.

While a person found to have violated the director general of public health's lockdown order will face a MVR 1,000 fine the first time, repeat offenders are being arrested under Article 533 (a) of the Penal Code.

Malé City was placed on lockdown following the detection of a Covid-19 community transmission on April 14. Lockdown easing began on Thursday.
