Maldives Police Service (MPS) has arrested an individual for violating the travel restriction placed across the Maldives.

Arrested under a court order is a woman and she is to have travelled from Maldives capital, Malé City to Omadhoo island in Alif Dhaal atoll, without the required permission from the authorities.

She was taken into police custody on Saturday.

Further, police has been continuing to stress on the importance of everybody’s cooperation in order to control the spread of the virus in the Maldives.

Unauthorized travel between islands has been banned after the discovery of a Covid-19 community transmission in the capital Malé City on April 15. The Greater Malé Region has been locked down since and the lockdown will remain in effect until May 28.

Authorities continue to take action against such violations, and the Civil Court has also been issuing orders on individuals who refuse to be taken into quarantine and provide samples as well.

While several measures are being implemented to curb the spread of the pandemic, authorities earlier predicted that the country is headed into a surge, within the next few weeks. However, the government is currently preparing to ease the lockdown, in phases.
