The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET) has issued white alerts over the regions where strong monsoon activities are expected to prevail.

The white alerts are among several issued in the region over the course of the past few days.

As such, one was issued from Haa Alif to southernmost Addu City, and the other was issued from Thaa atoll to Addu.

Heavy rain showers and thunderstorms are expected over the regions between Thaa and Addu City, from 10:15am to 3pm.

Similarly, strong winds of 19 – 24 miles per hour gusting to 45 miles per hour with choppy seas, are expected to prevail from Haa Alif to Addu City between 9:30am and 2pm.

The department urged individuals to be cautious of the adverse weather conditions and strong monsoon activities such as heavy rain and strong winds.

Choppy seas will prevail throughout the country with the possibility to swell wave surges during high tides.

Generally, scattered rain showers with occasional squally showers and thunderstorms are expected over the entire country with winds varying between southwest to westerly in the south and west to northwesterly elsewhere at 15 – 25 miles per hour.

Winds are expected to gust between 45 – 55 miles per hour during showers.

The southernmost city has been severely affected by heavy rain showers which caused deep flooding throughout most of its districts, since the southwest monsoon began. The monsoon has wreaked havoc across the city, inflicting damage that is heavier than ever before.
