Authorities have decided to allow congregational prayers in islands that do not have any Covid-19 restrictions.
Islamic Minister, Dr. Ahmed Zahir Ali made the announcement at Thursday night’s Covid-19 press briefing at the National Emergency Operations Center (NEOC).
Congregational prayers have been suspended since March 18, in all inhabited islands, as a precautionary measure against the spread of coronavirus. This ban has been extended several times, with the latest extension which is to remain until May 28 announced last week.
Speaking at Thursday night’s press conference, the Islamic minister emphasized that they have been following recommendations of health professionals in making these decisions.
Noting that they have since been given the green light to continue congregational prayers is islands that pose no threat of a Covid-19 community spread, Dr. Zahir stated that the congregational prayers in these islands will restart on Friday.
There are some conditions, including performing wudu at home, while the elderly and those with flu-like symptoms have been asked to refrain from visiting the mosques.
A circular is to be issued to the councils of those islands that are permitted to continue congregational prayers.
Maldives is to begin easing lockdown restrictions later this month, with authorities stressing that this will be done in phases.
