Maldives’ Ambassador to Belgium, Hassan Sobir has shared the country Covid-19 situation with Deputy Managing Director of the European External Action Service (EEAS).

The two discussed the global pandemic, during a meeting on Wednesday.

Sobir also shared details of the measures taken by Maldives, in order to contain the virus, as well as its economic impacts.

The ambassador also stressed that the island nation is in need of international assistance for the country’s “economic recovery”.

While tourism is the largest economic industry in the Maldives, it has been on a standstill following the pandemic.

Authorities have said that the crisis has had a major impact on the country’s economy, and that international assistance is required to overcome this.

Tourism Minister Ali Waheed, on Wednesday, stressed that the country cannot afford to keep the tourism industry on a standstill "for months".
