The Maldives Minister of Foreign Affairs, Abdulla Shahid has discussed the measures being implemented by the government in its Covid-19 response efforts, with Foreign Minister of Republic of Korea, Kang Kyung-wha.

This was done during a telephone conversation between both ministers on Wednesday morning.

Discussions mainly revolved around the impacts of the pandemic on the Maldives, especially economically.

As such, FM Shahid highlighted the downfall of the country’s economic growth, noting that Maldives, as a small-island developing state, is highly dependent on tourism and imports.

Briefing his counterpart on the Maldives' health sector’s capacity to cope with the pandemic, FM Shahid requested assistance from the government of Korea, for “urgent needs”.

He went on to thank the government of Korea, for the assistance and support extended over the years and both ministers reaffirmed commitment to continue cooperating and collaborating in enhancing the interests on areas of mutual concern both bilaterally and internationally.

FM Shahid also praised their “excellent efforts” and expressed hope to learn from them in the country’s Covid-19 response.
