Mohamed Saeed, the Minister of Economic affairs has met with James Dauris, the ambassador assigned to the Maldives by the British government.
The Economic Ministry said on Wednesday that minister Saeed had a ‘fruitful’ meeting with Dauris where they discussed expanding trade and economic cooperation.
Britain is an important market for Maldivian fish, and had imported up to USD 9.8 million of it.
Further, in his presidential address for 2017, President Abdulla Yameen said that the government’s decision to bring Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company under the State Trading Organisation has greatly bolstered its canned-tuna trade, for which Europe is a large market.
The British embassy in Colombo, which handles operations for Maldives as well, oversees a Department for International Development, which gives Maldivian corporations access to the British economy.
