The Parliament's Committee on National Security Services has approved a proposal for tourism research via the Maldives National University (MNU).
The tourist arrival forecast was proposed by MP for Hulhudhoo Ilyas Labeeb. While presenting the proposal, Ilyas stated that the tourism ministry needs to check whether a report has been compiled on the next probable date for tourist arrivals into the country. Since no relevant authority has taken such an initiative, Ilyas suggested for the committee to conduct a forecast study via a third party; the Maldives National University (MNU).
In response, Deputy Speaker Eva Abdulla stated that research into the economic impact of Covid-19 on the country's tourism is essential.
During the meeting, South Henveyru MP Hussain Shaheem stated that the tourism ministry will find it difficult to carry out such a forecast amidst the pandemic.
The proposal was approved with the unanimous votes of all members present.
