All people on Kuredu Island Resort are to be tested for Covid-19.
While different monitoring measures are placed on islands with positive or suspected coronavirus cases, the government’s Covid-19 taskforce spokesperson noted that Kuredu’s case ‘is different from other islands.’
Mohamed Mabrook Aziz said that this is because it is the only island with a locally-transmitted case.
Hence, everyone on the resort will be tested before being allowed to leave the island.
Kuredu Island Resort was placed on lockdown and on orange alert due to this, for a 28-day period.
While a total of five cases were reported from the resort, two are employees who are to have contracted the virus from an Italian tourist; these are the first confirmed cases in the country.
This tourist was allowed to leave the island and the country despite showing Covid-19 like symptoms, and an investigation has been launched into the matter.
Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem ordered the criminal investigation into the initial spread of the disease in the Maldives.
Travel between resorts and islands have been banned since around March 15, and the country suspended issuing on-arrival visas on March 27. While the latter brought changes to the protocol in which employees can leave a resort, it can only be done 14 days after the last tourist's arrival.
Authorities on Sunday revealed that a total of 2,670 samples have been tested for Covid-19.
