Maldives' Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid has held telephonic discussions with Japan's State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Wakamiya Kenji.

Discussions featured Japan's role in "mobilizing global support for vulnerable countries affected by the virus."

Elaborating on measures taken by the Maldives to contain the spread of Covid-19, Minister Shahid commended measures taken by the Japanese government against the rapidly spreading disease.

Minister Shahid went onto thank the Japanese government for the timely assistance provided in efforts against Covid-19, in February this year.

As such, State Minister Wakamiya revealed the Japanese Government’s decision to provide financial assistance to UNICEF Maldives and the Maldives Red Crescent. Both organizations have provided vital support in the Maldives government’s efforts against the spread of Covid-19 in the country.

Japan has been one of the biggest development partners to the Maldives, having contributed immensely to the country’s socio-economic development during the past few decades.

In early 2020, the government of Japan provided a grant as well as necessary equipment to the Home for People with Special Needs. During October 2019, the President made an official visit to Japan and attended the Enthronement Ceremony of Naruhito, the Emperor of Japan.

The country has extended aid in promoting local industries, addressing the negative impacts of climate change as well as environmental issues alongside disaster management. Further, the government of Japan also provided equipment for disaster reduction, equipment for several sectors such as the health and education sectors and grant aid to enhance security efforts.
