Police said that one person, out of the 139 people, was fined for violating curfew on Sunday.

While a three-hour curfew was introduced in the capital on Thursday, this is one the government’s many measures to curb the spread of Covid-19 in the country; Malé City is one of the most densely populated cities in the world.

However, police reported a number of curfew violations in the first four days. As such, there were 95 violators on Thursday, 151 on Friday and 141 on Saturday.

122 Maldivians and 17 foreign nationals are to have violated curfew on Sunday, and one person was fined.

While curfew violators are given a warning the first time, they can be fined up to MVR 1,000 for violations.

Those exempt from the curfew include security and law enforcement officers, healthcare workers and other essential service providers.

The order to impose a three-hour curfew in Maldives’ capital was announced on April 1, which also prohibits gatherings of more than three persons during non-curfew hours.

In addition, shops are to be closed from 11pm to 6am while restaurants are ordered to suspend takeaways and deliveries from 12am to 6am. Construction work must be halted from 5pm to 6am as well.

These measures are taken by the Director General of Public Health, under the state of public health emergency declared on March 12.
