A motion to amend the government's Covid-19 economic stimulus package has been submitted to parliament.
The motion was submitted on behalf of main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) by the party's parliamentary group leader and MP for Central Henveyru, Ali Azim.
Azim submitted the motion during Monday's parliament sitting held via video conference.
The government's economic stimulus package was established to mitigate the economic downturn caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Highlighting that the economic stimulus package has offered seven types of aid, Azim noted that assistance for those who have lost their employment due to the pandemic and daily wage workers also need to be included in the package.
The motion recommends two initiatives;
- Identifying islands with large populations and implementing programmes by the Ministry of Fisheries Marine Resources and Agriculture that promote the agriculture industry.
- Establishing a special package under the package allocated for the fisheries industry, for those who seek to promote fish products in the international market
The motion passed to the debate stage with the votes of all 67 members present.
While MP's debated the motion during Monday's sitting, the will continue on Tuesday.
