The People’s Majlis is to debate on approving President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s nomination of Aishath Mohamed Didi to the post of the new Minister of Gender, Family and Social Services.

The president’s request seeking approval for her appointment was forwarded to the parliament's committee on government oversight on 11 February.

The committee has since passed to approve Aishath as the new Gender Ministry, it was passed unanimously by all members present at the committee meeting.

President Solih sent Aishath’s name for parliament approval at a time the previous Gender Minister, Shidhatha Shareef forwarded her resignation, less than a day after the main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party’s Parliamentary Group voted to dismiss her from her post.

Aishath served as the High Commissioner of Maldives to neighboring India prior to her appointment as Gender Minister.

She has experience in the field as well, having served as Gender Minister from 2005 to 2008 during the tenure of ex-President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.

Further, Aishath was a member of the United Nation’s Task Force on Gender and its Task Force on Youth and Adolescents, as well as the chairperson of the Children’s Home Governing Board, Council for the Rights of Children and Society for Health Education

She has a Bachelor’s Degree in Arts from Lebanon and a Masters attained from the United Kingdom.
