Countless contributions by women have "uplifted and enriched" human life, says President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

Taking to Twitter to extend felicitations in commemoration of International Women’s Day, celebrated on 8 March annually, the president wrote that we celebrate the innumerable contributions made by women that have “uplifted and enriched human life”.

The president added that the government firmly believes that an “equal world” is an “enabled world”.

Further, the tweet reads that the administration is steadfast to recommit to removing barriers hindering women from their full potential.

Women empowerment is one of the current administration’s highest policies since coming into power during November 2018.

As such, the government has made loans easily accessible to women through SME banking.

It is also notable that one of the biggest amendments to the Decentralization Act which was recently ratified, allocates 33 percent of local council seats for women.

In late February, the People's Majlis approved to lift certain restrictions placed on the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), after the president sought the approval in December 2019.
