Maziya Sports and Recreation Club are the champions of the Dhiraagu Dhivehi Premier League.
The team won the league after earning 51 points in 21 games. Club Eagles was in second place with 45 points, while TC Sports Club was in third with 41 points.
While Maziya had secured the top place prior to the league’s final match with Eagles on Monday, the latter won this game with 2-1 score.
Both teams showed an equal performance during the first half of the match held at the National Stadium, but Eagles’ Toshiki Okomoto scored the first goal of the match with an assist from Hassan Raif Ahmed at the 38th minute.
The first half ended with a 1-0 score with Club Eagles in the lead.
While Maziya got the opportunity to equalize the game after winning a penalty at the 63rd minute, Ibrahim Waheed Hassan’s attempt was blocked by keeper Mohamed Sinah.
Maziya had other chances to score, but Club Eagles ended up extending the lead at the 82nd minute with a goal from Ahmed Rizwan.
The league champion’s only goal of the game was scored at the 88th minute, by substitute Hamza Mohamed.
The fair play team of the league was awarded to Club Eagles, while Maziya’s Ovays Azizi won best goal keeper.
This is Maziya Sports and Recreation Club’s second premier league win. It won the league back in 2016 as well.
Despite the Dhivehi Premier League ending, there are two more championships this football season; Football Association (FA) Cup and the President’s Cup. In addition, Maziya has secured a spot in the AFC Cup group stages, along with TC Sports Club.
