Member of the presidential commission on murders and enforced disappearances (DDCom), Fareesha Abdulla has responded to the criticism directed at the slow pace of the commission's work.

While the commission continues to face criticism over its “slow pace”, Fareesha said that this is because of the immense workload due to some institutions failing to do their part in the investigation.

Highlighting on the matter, Fareesha said that the commission’s investigations showed that these institutions had even failed to log some crucial phone records. She stressed that such records are kept for a period of six months, adding that these are not available “after so many years.”

Further noting that they have faced difficulties in obtaining some information in the cases, she added that they are not content with the pace of the work as well.

She also highlighted that the commission -established in November 2018- has already acquired “a lot more” information than all the institutions combined in the previous years, and emphasized that the new details have also been shared with the public.

Fareesha also noted that all institutions have been cooperating since the ratification of the Bill of Presidential Commissions, which grants authority to summon and gather official statements from persons of interest and to request search and arrest warrants to the commissions.

When RaajjeMV inquired on when the commission will be able to conclude all investigations and publicize the findings, the DDCom official stated that “the commission’s work will be completed before the end of the year.”

The Commission on Murders and Enforced Disappearances was formed on incumbent President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s first day in office.
