The flooding is to have been caused by continued heavy showers yesterday

Some houses in Narudhoo island of Shaviyani atoll have been damaged due to flooding.

Noting that the island experience heavy showers from Friday evening to early Sunday morning, an official from the island’s council told RaajjeMV that five houses were damaged.

The planning officer at the council, Ahmed Mahir said some household items were damaged as well.

Mahir added that they are working with officers with the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) to drain the water, using the water pump system at the council.

Around 630 people reside in Narudhoo island.

Some regions in the country, especially northern and central atoll, have been experiencing widespread rain and heavy showers with swell surges in the past few days.

Islands affected by swell surges due to the recent weather conditions include Holhudhoo island in Noonu atoll, Narudhoo island in Shaviyani atoll, Dhiggaru island in Meemu atoll, Maduvvari island in Raa atoll, Hoarafushi island in Haa Alif atoll, Kinolhas island in Raa atoll and Dhevvadhoo island in Gaaf Alif atoll.

The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET Office) predicts for heavy showers and thunderstorms to continue on Saturday, and a white alert between Haa Alifu and Lhaviyani atolls was issued from 4am to 4am.
