Maldives Police Service (MPS) has launched an investigation into a case of sexual assault of a 30-year-old woman with special needs.

According to the police, the case was reported to them close to 07:30pm on Monday.

No arrests have been made in connection to the sexual assault case thus far.

Authorities refrained from disclosing further details in order to protect the victim, other than that the case was reported to it's Upper-North Division; this area comprises of Haa Dhaal, Haa Alif and Shaviyani atolls.

This comes at a time sexual assault cases have been reported more frequently of recent, especially sexual assault against children.

According to the latest statistics by the Ministry of Gender, Family and Social Services, 27 cases of sexual assault against children were reported during December 2019.
