Elections Commission of the Maldives (EC) and the Maldives Police Service (MPS) have signed an agreement for the security detail of the 2020 local council and women's development committee elections.
The agreement was signed by the President of the Elections Commission (EC), Ahmed Shareef on behalf of EC and the Commissioner of Police, Mohamed Hameed on behalf of MPS at a special ceremony on Monday.
Speaking at the ceremony, Shareef stated that every election is connected to the public's best interest. Hence, preparations for the upcoming local council have differed in comparison to previous elections due to changes in regulations. Further, he stated such large-scale elections require an overwhelming amount of work that cannot be undertaken without the help of other state institutions.
Moreover, he claimed that the MPS have always been a reliable partner to the EC, offering all available resources during every election.
As such, the commissioner of police stated that the agreement signed today features policing and logistical support protocols that have been recently established based on protocols from previous elections.
Additionally, EC stated that the agreement is similar to contracts regarding elections signed in the past but will be almost the same as the agreements signed during the parliamentary elections.
The 2020 local council elections and the 2020 women's development committee elections have been slated for April 4th.
