Maldives Police Service (MPS) has discovered a tourist dead inside a room in Eriyadu Island Resort.

Police received the report of the 60-year-old Russian man’s death close to 02:30pm on Thursday.

Upon receiving the report, a team of officers were immediately dispatched to the resort located in the north of Kaafu atoll.

The Russian man’s body has since been brought to Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH).

While the cause of his death has not been disclosed yet, police have since launched further investigations into the Russian tourist’s death.

Earlier in December, MPS also launched a probe into the death of three foreigners; a 62-year-old American tourist in Park Hyatt Maldives Hadahaa Resort, a 38-year-old Indonesian's death in Lily Beach Resort and a 62-year-old Chinese tourist Fihaalhohi Resort.

A record number of tourist deaths were reported during 2019, despite which the country's tourist arrivals crossed one million. Authorities earlier assured the public that Maldives is a safe place for tourists and even launched an investigation where local guesthouses and tourist accommodation facilities were to be inspected.
