The group of Maldivians and foreigners stranded in Cochin Airport due to delays in Maldivian flights were brought to Maldives late Monday.

The country’s national airline, Maldivian told RaajjeMV that those arriving to Maldives from Cochin on Monday were stranded at the airport after the flight was cancelled. However, they were brought to Maldives late Monday night.

One of the Maldivians stranded at Cochin Airport revealed that there were about three groups of Maldivians scheduled to catch the flight back to Maldives, along with a group of expatriate teachers who had to go into work early Tuesday.

While the flight was cancelled after it was delayed several times, Maldivian provided the stranded groups with food and accommodation throughout.

Highlighting that the flights were “not being delayed on purpose”, Maldivian stressed that delays are expected as it is the tourist peak season which in turn leads to traffic congestion every year.

Some flights have been experiencing major delays these days, with Velana International Airport having broken its previous record of flight and runway movements on Sunday. With this being said, flights do not land at VIA at night as the runway is closed at night for renovation work.
