MP for South Henveyru constituency, Hussain Shaheem, has stated that appropriate measures have yet to be taken against extremist ideologies.
While appearing on RaajjeTV's "FalaSuruhee" program, Shaheem claimed that appropriate measures have not been taken against extremist ideologies despite the parliament giving the relevant authorities all necessary support and jurisdiction to take action.
His statement comes at a time when authorities have launched special operations and raids around the country.
According to Shaheem, extremists are not people that pray regularly, fast during Ramadan or live according to the Sunnah, but that they are people engaging in illicit activities who are pretending to be religious.
Additionally, he claimed that extremist ideologies are being spread by people recruiting Maldivians for terrorist organisations and encourage terrorist activity against fellow Maldivians.
As such, the National Counter Terrorism Centre has warned the public to beware of extremists tirelessly spreading propaganda 24/7 via social media.
Authorities have begun taking strict measures against people that denounce the state declaring it "un-Islamic", justify attacks against the life and property of non-extremists and believes that Islam permits marrying off and raping underage children.
