The MVR 29 million case lodged at the civil court against former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom by MP for Kaashidhoo constituency, Abdulla Jabir has commenced into the dispute resolution stage.
Dispute resolution is the first stage of the case submission process of the civil court and deals with settling the matter outside of court procedures by mediating between parties. If no resolution is found, the case is forwarded for trial.
RaajjeMV has learned that the dispute resolution stage was held this Sunday, where the documents related to the case were handed over to Gayoom's legal team.
MP Jabir had previously said that he had lent the money to Gayoom “to assist in the work to consolidate democracy” in the country.
Leader of Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) and Kaashidhoo constituency MP, Abdulla Jabir has filed a case against former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom at the Civil Court after claims that they had agreed for Gayoom to pay him back with interest.
As such, Jabir is seeking to seize the former president’s residence, should he fail to pay MVR 29 million owed to him.
While Jabir had filed this case at the police earlier this year, police had initially rejected it due to lack of evidence. Jabir filed the case a second time with evidence but withdrew the case after ‘forgiving’ Gayoom in October.
The MP revealed that this was his mother, Maryam Manik’s, wishes, whom he said has a close relationship with the former president. Jabir had also said that that he did not intend to take the former president to court over the matter.
While Jabir claims to have lent Gayoom MVR 29 million ahead of the 2018 presidential elections with interests, Gayoom denies this.
