President returns to capital after concluding Laamu atoll tour

Meetings took place with local council members and institution representatives from three islands

Having concluded his tour across Laamu atoll, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has returned to capital city Malé on Friday morning.

During the trip, Solih visit Gan, Hithadhoo as well as Fonadhoo islands and was accompanied by Health Minister Abdulla Ameen, Economic Minister Fayyaz Ismail as well as Fisheries Minister Zaha Waheed and MP for Gan constituency, Mohamed Wisam.

The main highlight of his trip was attending the Golden Jubilee anniversary of Laamu Hithadhoo Health Center where the president urged to implement a prevention-based public health system and practice inclusive social awareness in order to maintain a healthier lifestyle as part of the country’s efforts to curb non-communicable diseases.

Further, meetings took place with local council members and institution representatives from all three islands where the president was briefed on challenges faced in carrying out councilors’ duties.

Some concerns include social housing, road development and issues with local farmers in Gan island, the lack of utility services, delay in road development as well as issues in the island’s fishermen community in Hithadhoo island as well as waste management issues, improving public transport and school renovation in Fonadhoo island.

In addition, meeting with the fishermen community of the atoll, Solih held discussions revolving around ways that may be introduced to resolve challenges surfacing for the community. Some of the difficulties noted by the community include acquiring ice, the prices for which their catch are sold, banking difficulties as well as difficulties in using the “Fahi Hakatha” mobile application.

The President also visited the Agricultural Centre in Gan during his trip which began on Thursday morning.
