The Ministry of Tourism has announced that lifeguard services will be introduced in 19 islands around the country starting from January onwards.
While speaking on RaajjeTV's "Fala Suruhee" programme on Sunday night, Deputy Minister at the Ministry of Tourism, Assad Riza, stated that the ministry has undertaken work to expand local tourism as well as reduce the number of tourist related accidents.
As such, Assad revealed that lifeguards will be established at 19 islands around the country within January 2020 but he did not elaborate any further.

Assad added that the work to establish lifeguards is currently ongoing at a swift rate and that each lifeguard will receive a remuneration of MVR10,000.
The ministry is seeking to hire not only competent individuals but also locals residing on the island where the service is being introduced.
The ministry is making ongoing efforts to tackle the rising issue of accidents related to tourists, and taking action to increase the safety of tourists visiting the Maldives.
